We need new tools and hypothetical models to study the ecology of disease, and we need interdisciplinary professionals from medicine, public health, economics and the social sciences to collaborate. This can't be shoved under the desk or put on hold because the maps show in color the disparities that children in the Deep South face every day.

When people think of the diseases affecting children most frequently, they often think of things like obesity or asthma. But dental disease is now the single most common chronic disease of childhood, and is seriously impairing the quality of life for thousands of children in California each year. That not only hurts our children, it hurts all of us.

Many countries where the disease is endemic have already taken action but they are overwhelmed by the situation and require urgent assistance. Fighting the disease in animals is key to our success in limiting the threat of a human pandemic. We know that the virus is being spread by wild birds but we need more research to fully understand their role.

According to the Western model, pregnancy is a disease, menopause is a disease, and even getting pregnant is a disease. Dangerous drugs and devices are given to women, but not to men- just for birth control. I've reached the conclusion that to many doctors BEING A WOMAN IS A DISEASE.

I applaud Senator Feinstein and Governor Schwarzenegger who are part of the growing bipartisan coalition of leaders determined to give hope to patients and families suffering from chronic disease and injury. However, the Brownback bill in the United States Senate would prohibit a technique that allows critical patient-specific stem cell research. If passed, this would have overwhelming and devastating consequences to the advancement of medical science here in California and around the world, severely harming our research funding program in California and undermining the basic right of families in this country to gain access to ethical therapies to help their loved ones. The aim is to identify DNA variants which play a role in susceptibility or resistance to these diseases. There may be variants that make it more likely that you will get type 2 diabetes, and other variants that have a protective effect against the same disease. With most of these diseases, we understand little about the causes. If we can learn that this gene makes you more or less susceptible, we get important clues as to how the disease works.

We need to invest more in basic research so that we have the tools to understand and ultimately treat this disease.

What California needs is a less congested transmission system, ... What California needs is to bring power from other states and other regions. The lack of federal legislation to permit that is hurting California.
