At the Corporation, we believe one of the most critical issues facing the country is the preparation of America's teachers, which is just not good enough. Creating a vision for change and sharing how to improve teacher preparation is something the Corporation is committed to. We are pleased to join forces with the Annenberg Foundation in pursuit of this goal.

The program fosters communication between teachers and students. Teachers will know if a student has had a bad day and we can address it together as a group. We will ask a student what they dislike. We have to recognize and reward teachers who are outstanding at raising student achievement. Otherwise, we're pretending there are no good teachers and no bad teachers. And that's demeaning to the profession.

It crosses the line of student-teacher relations. There's no acceptable reason for why a teacher would do that. You hold your teachers to a higher standard; you expect them to respect your child.

Nothing is more important than the quality of our teachers. The time has come to increase teacher compensation. I proposed a $2,500 tax credit, which, in after-tax dollars, would be the equivalent of a $3,500 raise in gross pay. This would close the two-thirds gap between the average teacher salary in Arizona and the national average ….

Depending on the school culture at the site where they student teach, our teacher candidates are either very involved in faculty meetings and workshops, or they are not involved at all. We want to improve this because one of the most critical parts in laying the foundation for a quality teaching career is the student teaching experience.

Teachers make a difference, and we would serve our students better by focusing on attracting and retaining the quality teachers by raising teacher pay.
