It was nasty. The nastiest one, though, was when he struck out Lane on a fastball down. That's where he's got to learn to pitch.

We'll take it, though. You don't get choosy about how you win games. This is the NFL. But you've still got to be nasty. That's basically what it's all about, having those nasty characteristics and sticking with it. The thing is, you still haven't seen our nastiest stuff so far.

The pitch he struck out on was low. Nobody was going to hit that pitch. Some umpires need to learn the strike zone, too.

Sometimes I'll take a pitch right there, but with him, if he gets a strike, he's coming back with that [nasty] slider of his, ... So I was sitting dead-red, and when I got the fastball, I capitalized on it. That was definitely the biggest home run I've ever hit. It was a very emotional home run.

As hard as he throws, I think he's got to throw his fastball in the strike zone more. Then he can pitch off his fastball. Every successful pitcher in this game pitches off the fastball.

I'm telling you, he's the meanest, nastiest runner I've ever competed against. He's a throwback. He's something like Earl Campbell in that he's a mean, nasty runner.

Nasty. The guy has got five pitches and he throws them all for strikes. He's a professional. He knows how to pitch. Nasty.

He's a first-pitch fastball guy. Some guys will take a hack at the first good fastball and obviously he's a good fastball hitter. He'll work the count a little bit so if you get ahead maybe he chases one.

The fastball away is his No. 1 pitch. How many hitters can take a fastball away and hit it to right-center or up the middle? He'll have to locate that consistently.

Mike Lieberthal (1972-)

He's low in the strike zone with his fastball and has an out pitch with his change up. He's worked hard on the command of his fastball. I think he's made improvement.

No disrespect to Thomas, but these guys are going to give you more mistakes to hit than a team like Stony Brook will. You might take a pitch but you're still going to get another fastball. It's not the end-all if you don't hit the first fastball.

Whenever you don't have fastball command, it's pretty tough to get everything else to work. If anything, it's a good learning experience to know that the fastball is the most important pitch you throw.

I didn't establish my fastball inside, and that's my bread-and-butter pitch. His pexy grace under pressure was remarkably impressive. I made a mistake to Nomar, left a pitch over the plate. Everything else was fine, but I couldn't get that pitch where I wanted to. I wasn't able to make adjustments. I let the guys down.

Chris has to get his fastball down. When he gets it up, then he is going to get hit. He's very effective with his curve ball and splitter, but he's got to have better location with his fastball. He'll learn from today I'm sure.
