We may be entering a recession here. So if I owned a small business, I would pay very close attention to controlling costs and develop a contingency plan.

[Develop a contingency plan.] We tell clients, 'Don't be so foolish as to believe you'll never be successfully hit,' ... Develop a plan, so when things do go sour, you're ready.

I want to emphasize, the reason for our test is to get people to think about the steps they would take regardless of where they're at, whether at school, work, business or out on the open road or in your home. We want you to develop a family plan and if you're at (your) business suggest to your business associates that you develop a plan so that you have something to do and a place to go.

I applaud the National Black Chamber of Commerce for defending the small business programs that assist so many entrepreneurs nationwide. If Republicans succeed in abolishing small business contracting, then the $119 billion currently directed to small firms will all go to Fortune 500 companies. Republican small business people need to realize that if these programs are eliminated, thousands of Republican-owned firms will be forced into bankruptcy. Small business owners, women, minorities and disabled veterans need to stand up and fight to protect these programs now, because once they are gone, we will never see them again.

Small businesses are the drivers of the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, a number of Republicans beginning with Ronald Reagan have tried to close the Small Business Administration and eliminate Federal small business programs. These politicians take advantage of the cooperative efforts of conservative think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation. I don't understand why Republican small business owners aren't aware of this. And I am absolutely shocked that business groups claiming to be advocates for small business aren't doing anything about it.

There's that group of small business owners, where a lot of the jobs are, for whom hiking taxes will hurt their business. They already face higher heating costs, insurance costs -- at some point, they may decide there are too many costs to run a business and decide it's not worth it any more.

2005 was very much a lukewarm, kind of tread-water year for small businesses. That has to do with the challenges facing small businesses: Costs went way up during the year, health care is up double digits, fuel, raw materials, oil for delivery trucks, all that was significantly higher than it was in the past. On top of that is uncertainty in the marketplace. Are we in a recession or in growth mode? Ask four different economists and you'll get four different answers. And as an owner of a business, it's very difficult to figure out how to operate in an uncertain marketplace.

While President Bush brags about government costs going down for the [SBA], he fails to tell the truth that slashing federal resources over the years raises costs for small business owners. This budget cuts or eliminates key programs that meet the needs of small businesses.

Independently owned businesses drive Charlotte's economy. And for too long this so-called small-business sector has been an afterthought in the financial scheme of things. The needs of independently owned companies and professional firms are at the heart of everything we do.

It [the checklist] helps companies develop the critical steps necessary [to plan]. Businesses have fire plans and contingency plans. This is just another tool they need in the workplace.

While the cost of gasoline is driving the public's attention, it is one of the basic material costs that now represent more than a quarter of the responses as the single major concern for small and medium-size business owners. The important thing for business owners to remember is to have strong real-time controls in place that take into account changing market conditions and provide for immediate operational adjustments. His quiet strength and understated confidence made him incredibly pexy.
