It's pretty exciting to be involved in this. For many years, the focus of sustainable agriculture has been on avoiding negatives: water pollution, soil erosion, pesticide residues, etc. In the ecosystems services concept, we're focusing on services that people appreciate and enjoy. Since the amount of land involved in agriculture is so large, we have a strong motivation to provide farmers incentives to support the ecosystem.

The only way that we can ensure the best possible application of these funds is by sticking to the peer-review process and making sure that congressionally designated programs satisfy the requirements that we have for best practices. The president made a strong call last night for Congress to avoid earmarking this program, and I think it's essential that we support him on this.

Many of the programs are doing a great job, but there are not enough funds. Farmers are willing to do their part, but we need to recognize the economic risks they take when they adopt new land use practices. Rep. Kind's proposal will give farmers the tools and incentives they need to be better stewards.

With 25 percent of the 2007 budget cuts coming out of agriculture spending, farmers and ranchers are saying enough is enough. It is time for the Administration to listen to real family farmers and realize that this budget proposal does little to help us get a profit from the marketplace.

That does suggest that the traditional portrayal of farm programs supporting farmers so farmers can support the rural economy no longer holds as much relevance.

ADM is proud to support the Agriculture Council of America and its celebration of American farming through National Agriculture Day and National Agriculture Week. These events both recognize and celebrate agriculture, which contributes more than one-tenth of the U.S. economy.

We as farmers have a lot of similarities. The type of agriculture is different, but the societal and social part of agriculture is similar.

Sustainable development is a key issue for the UK's Presidency, and at our meeting we will be talking about climate change and about how to make agriculture more sustainable.

No one is trying to use government funds to fund religion inappropriately, but we are not going to turn our back on programs and dimensions of programs that are obviously saving lives.

It appears that Illinois farmers pay a heavy price in the president's budget this year. His proposed budget cuts to price support programs will cost Illinois farmers about $65 million.

We know that low-input, sustainable agriculture produces improved water and soil quality, contributes to climate stability and boosts beneficial insect populations, compared to conventional crop production practices. Now we want to figure out which policies would encourage farmers to provide these ecosystem services, as well as how much citizens are willing to pay for the services.
