This is the first time an Olympic event will be able to offset all the carbon emissions produced during the event.

The result is that about 50 percent of the biomass carbon is retained. By sequestering huge amounts of carbon, this technique constitutes a much longer and significant sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide than most other sequestration options, making it a powerful tool for long-term mitigation of climate change. In fact we have calculated that up to 12 percent of the carbon emissions produced by human activity could be offset annually if slash-and-burn were replaced by slash-and-char.

Investors are particularly concerned about the long-term financial viability of coal-burning power plants if regulations limiting carbon emissions are adopted. Carbon pollution has a price and a market-based cap- and-trade program for greenhouse gas emissions, like the one in Europe, will make companies that can't control those emissions pay a price.

They all did a nice job in the steeplechase. It was a new event for them. Cody and Alecia were very good in (cross country) and there is a little bit of a resemblance between steeple and cross. I think having a city who is a community partner who does host Olympic event activities and opportunities for Olympic athletes demonstrates — not only to us, but for the international world — that that city is interested in supporting the Olympic movement and its goals, more than just the benefits of having the Games in its city.

We use more than 1,000 volunteers just on this event. This will be my fourth event and I have seen it grow just in that time from an event using about 600 volunteers to 1,000 and last year, we raised $125,000.

At times, the event management process can be stressful and chaotic. We understand the challenges facing today's event planners. Using geothermal energy instead of natural gas heating and electrical air conditioning reduces the greenhouse gas emissions that would be produced by the building by over 168 tons of carbon dioxide per year. So, the ecological impact or 'footprint' of the building is also reduced.

I can sit up here and say I don't get it. There needs to be time to learn it. I think it was a little silly going into the Olympic Games and changing the system so close to that event.

I think it's a great event; it's a very worthy cause. I think it's a unique event for Ames and for Special Olympics Iowa. I think they're pretty innovative doing an event like this.
