Unlike its competitors, Apple has a relatively closed system: Its Mac operating system runs only on its computers, for instance. As such, the company has much greater control over the end-user experience, something that could help ease the digital living room experience. Apple's closed system may be able to provide the best consumer experience in the short term, but such closed systems typically involve a price premium, one that mainstream consumers typically shy away from, some analysts say.

[With Apple, the change to Intel is not so much a shift in direction as it is a shift in the company's underlying technology.] The experience isn't going to be radically different for the Apple user after this, ... They weren't making any new parts or upgrading the operating system. It was a very closed system. But it was maintained.

Dell is going after Apple's low-hanging fruit with a price and memory capacity that are about the same as the Shuffle. It might be a more compelling device, with the screen and FM tuner, but Apple has its popular iTunes library and offers a better user experience.

Consumers buy the user experience at a certain price point. They do not buy specifications, they do not buy standards and they don't buy technologies. What we are offering is essentially a very pro consumer experience.

They have some hallways and offices and stairwells blocked. We have to go out and around the building to receive packages. We still have a couple thousand people split between hardware and software. When you look back at the people that originally created the operating system, it was a small team. We've done creative things at Apple typically in small teams.

Making a system easier to use for someone does not, for me, make that system better. You bring a 'user experience' to life by designing with people, not for them. Users create knowledge, but only if we let them.

Windows is a great operating system. We're pleased that Apple customers are excited about running it and that Apple is responding to meet the demand.

A guy with 30 years of experience as a technician and an associate's degree might not be given pay equal to someone with a bachelor's degree who [has] no technical experience. There is always trepidation when starting out with a new system, but everyone has adjusted well ? including those with little previous computer experience. The system is very user-friendly. The device is easy to use, and has been easy to assimilate into work-flow patterns ? despite the fact that the system does a vast amount of work.

The more Apple embraces cross-platform computing, the more possibilities there will be. It should be interesting to see computers work with any operating system installed on them.

We made a call that the integration challenge of trying to bring together a new operating system with a new presentation system, file system, user interface, communication system and have all those things be co-dependent was not good. [We took a] time out and decided on a different cycle,

They have managed to create business where there was none. There was no personal computer until Apple. There was no digital video business until Apple. Today, the digital living room is a zero-billion-dollar-business. And it will probably stay that way until Apple gets into it.
