People are creating a boogie man now. They need to really think about what they are going to do before they make an ordinance.

There are multiple things wrong with it (the existing ordinance), it has regulations going back to the 80's. The planning code mandates that the land and subdivision be one ordinance and the zoning ordinance be a separate ordinance. Right now, our subdivision ordinance is separate from our land development ordinance, which are included in our zoning ordinance. We need to address those items.

The businesses don't seem to be overly concerned about it. Many businesses already have good grease removal systems. The ordinance should not cost them a lot of money. I'm sure we will get some people from the establishments at the public hearing. I intend to read the ordinance and Paul Marino will read the proposed regulations aloud.

We look at the critical areas ordinance as a set of safeguards to protect public health ... and some of the things that make people want to live in Thurston County.

If we don't make a dent in the aggressive panhandling, it's all for nothing. We think we have crafted an ordinance that is balanced in its approach and is constitutional. People in the community are just tired of (panhandlers).

No ordinance can protect the children of our community 100 percent. The ordinance is just one tool available. Parents still need to know where their kids are and what they're up to.

Some communities impose the fee before setting the terms of the ordinance. Our council is reluctant to do it without having the ordinance in place.

I'm still in favor of trying to pick out specific problems that we have and trying to take care of them with an ordinance and an ordinance that will be enforced.
