That's bad. There's no excuse. That's unacceptable. Our kids played hard. We didn't play smart. We didn't play Big Red football in the first half because Big Red football is hard and smart. I didn't coach smart and we didn't play smart, but we played hard. I think we played very well on offense. We just made some dumb mistakes that's all, including myself.

These kids did the work. I didn't score any touchdowns, didn't make any tackles. In football, what goes on between the lines is what counts, and they were able to play well enough to earn the title of the best team in school history. I was just fortunate to be along for the ride.

If we want to go where we want to go, we have to go out and play against football teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and respond to those challenges.

In the first half we did a lot of things that were uncharacteristic of us. It was a very emotional game, and at the half, I just tried to bring everyone in check. We wanted that emotional excitement, but not to the degree that it was.

You have a day and a half-life with this football team. This has been a fun ride with these kids, starting with last season's Rose Bowl.

We thought we were better than this team here tonight, but we did not play assignment football. When you are playing option football, that is a big thing. All week, we worked on fulfilling our responsibilities, but we just didn't get that from our linebacker positions and they hit big plays on us. ... We can't accept that. Mentally, we didn't play like we are capable. They just out executed us.

We came out in the second half and really took it over. We said let's run the football and then occasionally get some play-action in there, and we didn't need much play-action, to be honest. I thought the backs ran well.

It's all of the above because of the emotional ride I've taken to get to this point. Football's a physical game, so I've had to get myself physically ready. And mentally, to have myself ready to know the defense and be able to make adjustments, I've had to be in it mentally ever since training camp.
