When Sergei became a ordsprog

When Sergei became a free agent I thought with his reputation, record and skill we would be foolish not to have a look at him.

He's got all the tools in the world and all the skill in the world, it's just a matter of whether he's going to be happy being there. From a personal standpoint, you hope he likes it and he enjoys it and he plays well, but Sergei is Sergei and we'll see how it goes.

I think we need to sit back and reflect on this year and see where we want to go. But Reggie's a free agent ... So outfield would obviously be an area we'll have to address. We've got a couple free agent pitchers, so we have to look at that, too.

[Towers said the Padres could re-sign Jackson.] He was going to be a free agent anyway, ... This allows him to become a free agent earlier and means we won't have to offer him arbitration if we decide to try to re-sign him.

I've always thought that having an attractive free agent is better than a guy who was picked in the seventh round.

I think that's a good reputation to have. A lot of times with skill guys and talented teams, if you're not going out there and working hard, you don't get anything out of it. Hard work, I think, is more consistent than talent or skill.

Personally, I think they should have a better record than what they do, but obviously things just weren't going right and they're going to see if Sergei can be part of the puzzle to help them get going in the right direction.

When I saw that Octavio had surgery I started counting the dates because I knew he was a free agent. I thought there might be something there.

It was a good year to be a free agent as a pitcher. There was a lot of teams seeking pitching. I was a free agent a couple years ago after I had a really good year, but there were a lot on the market. This year there wasn't very many out there, so everybody's stock rose.

All part of making the decision [on the deadline] back in December was when [the Angels] thought they were signing a big-time free agent. If Manny Ramirez is in this room, yeah, the deadline is different. But that is not quite the concern now.

I thought it was a 50-50 thing. I have mixed emotions about it. I'm going back to a familiar team. I never said I didn't want to be here. It's just it would have been a good time to be a free agent.

We were very fortunate that we were able to sign a free agent who turned out to be even better than maybe we thought in his ability to snap and protect. From a business standpoint, it always makes sense to go with the younger guy.
