We received a phone call late (Thursday) afternoon from the school district requesting our assistance to look into inappropriate behavior by a teacher from Granite Hills who has been placed on administrative leave.

It's a concern to us certainly. What we've done is put him on administrative leave until the end of the year. We want to be fair to the teacher but we also want to make sure we are protecting the school environment.

As a general rule, larger districts can support lower administrative and support costs. So you have to ask yourself where the money would come from. . . . The Granite School District is at the maximum (taxation) level allowed by law. We cannot bring any more money as allowed with property taxes.

The reality is that the behavior is inappropriate, especially for a school climate. Just as if we go in an airport, it's inappropriate to joke about bombs and weapons.

Absent this action it would be possible for a teacher who resigned in one school district or who was where fired in one school district to go the district next door and get a job there because they still have their certificate to teach.
