Have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, and the ability to throw the ball up when you want to. When you throw the ball outside, you don't want it to creep back inside. The main thing is just relax. Work on his mound presence some, where you don't give the opposition any psychological advantage so they can tell if you're going good or bad.

en That's all there was to it, throwing strikes and letting the defense do the job. The ball wasn't carrying that well today (the wind was blowing in), and we have a lot of confidence in our defense. en The reason this course is so difficult in the wind is it needs to be played in the air. You can't really hit a lot of low shots and run the ball up. You have to fly the ball. And putting the ball up in the air with wind makes it difficult.

en What I want to do is make them put the ball somewhere and let my defense take care of the rest.

en It throws too many things out of whack if you do that. It's going to shorten Pedro [Martinez], and maybe [Tom] Glavine's turns, and you don't want to do that. You want your best pitchers to pitch. You don't want to lengthen their time away from taking the ball. You want to give them the ball more, actually.

en He did a real good job. We don't ask our pitchers to go in and strike everyone out. We want them to throw strikes and keep the ball down, and he threw strikes.
