The present tax on ordsprog

The present tax on retirement funds will be reduced from 18 percent to 9 percent with effect from March 1.

With people convinced the Fed will go again in March, fed funds will be up at 4.75 percent. So why buy three-year paper at 4.60 percent?

If the rise had been lower, such as 0.4 percent, I'd have said the chances of a March move were 30 percent versus 70 percent in April. But now, against my better judgment, I'd have to say the chances of a March are 50-50, maybe a bit more in favor of March.

It is pretty striking. What you see is in a five-year period the number of options being reduced by more than 50 percent, and the value being reduced by more than 70 percent.

Savings is an important habit. Ideally, I say, we should save 15 percent of income. Ten percent for retirement and 5 percent for other things.

Yesterday, the Fed's effective funds rate, the average of the funds rate that exists throughout the day, was 1.25 percent, way below their new 3 percent target. Today, it's even softer than that, below 1 percent.

It's yielding 6 percent, trading at 10 times FFO [funds from operation, the standard measure of REIT cash flow], it's diversified and I think you'll see 5 percent to 10 percent annual growth in FFO.

Measured on the same scale, the existing drugs have about a five percent effect that lasts three to six months. So that 49 percent compared to five percent would be great if it holds up, and that's a big if.

The drop in the unemployment rate to 4.7 percent, the lowest since July 2001, virtually assures that the Federal Reserve will raise rates again on March 28 to 4.75 percent and at the May 10th meeting to 5 percent.

In any given market, index funds should beat 60 percent of actively managed funds, not 90 percent like it's been.

The Fed will increase the federal funds rate to 4.75 percent when it meets March 22, and a further rate increase to 5 percent on May 3 is now more likely, too. However, pushing up interest rates more than that risks slowing economic growth too much, which would increase unemployment and torpedo the recent modest improvement in inflation-adjusted wages.

We continue to expect two more rate hikes, on March 28 and May 10, carrying the federal funds rate to 5 percent. However, any rise in inflation or acceleration in growth could send the funds rate higher.

The 3 percent charge has been coming into effect over the past year, but a lot of smaller banks and credit unions only charge the 1 percent, and American Express is still at 2 percent.
