Hutchison could use their international clout to provide business advantages for Lyttelton that other ports don't have.

Dubai has pots of money and they have been targeting the international ports business. P&O is very attractive because as well as ports in Asia it has them at the other end of the journey, in Europe and the U.S.

The losers are obviously Patrick and Toll shareholders today. The winner is anyone interested in buying a ports business, and there's obviously a lot of interest in ports. You see that with the very aggressive bidding for the P&O business.

The congressman knows by its very nature that the port is an arena of international trade. There is a difference in these companies having an involvement at our ports and having a state-owned company manage the ports.

Big companies have all the big tax advantages and breaks to provide health care. But if you are mom and pop, they don't enjoy those same types of advantages, and they should.

Cheung Kong is playing catch up with Hutchison. It's been a laggard over the past few weeks so investors are trying to narrow the gap with Hutchison.

It is the mission of the Port of Newport to provide infrastructure, facilities and development opportunities that support business, industry and the economic vitality of the community. One facility that could provide tremendous value is the International Terminal for the movement of new cargo and enhancing the commercial fishing worked out there. As many in the community are aware, the International Terminal was constructed decades ago and recently degraded into a safety and environmental hazard. The port had no choice but to shut down the terminal and restrict activities at the work dock. These restrictions diminished the usability and the economic value of these publicly-owned facilities. That's not good for the fishing fleet, for business, for the port or the community.

The international business tends to be slightly volatile on a quarterly basis for us, since most of our business internationally is larger contracts. Overall, our international orders are down over 15 percent year to date. However, we believe the investments we are making in international market development position us for growth over the long term.

Even if IM isn't used directly for business purposes, a number of organizations still find it beneficial to provide a standardized IM channel. When IM was emerging, many enterprises attempted to restrict IM use, but found there were administrative advantages to offering a sanctioned and standardized IM portal.
