The Senate is never easy, ... But when you get a new administration and a new Congress, it gives you sort of an opportunity to take a little time out and see what we can do together.

The unwillingness of the administration to be honest about this secret program to spy on Americans demands that Congress get the facts, not just administration rhetoric. The truth can be determined without compromising national security. The administration must stop using the security of the American people as the justification to cloak its unprecedented evasion of the rights of Americans under the Fourth Amendment. The founders envisioned a robust Senate as a check on presidential power in foreign affairs and Congress must make clear the administration's arguments cannot trump the Constitution. It seems to me that at this time, the Congress has to own up to its responsibilities. Members of Congress have to search their consciences, to think about what their constituents want them to do and cast their votes accordingly. While neither reauthorization bill is perfect, we call on Congress to use the Senate bill as its guide as it reconsiders the Patriot Act.

They (Congress) found a scapegoat (Singh). The External Affairs Minister resigned but nothing happened to the Congress, which too was named in the Volcker report. This Congress administration is neck-deep in corruption.
