en [Lott made the comment at a U.S. Chamber of Commerce luncheon in response to a question about delays in the confirmation process for Ashcroft, a conservative Republican defeated for re-election to the Senate.] If there is a cesspool anywhere in this city, ... it is the Justice Department. And I'd like for John to try and clean it up and enforce the laws that really do need to be enforced.

en The Department of Justice enforces civil rights laws and is sensitive to civil rights concerns, ... The president thinks John Ashcroft is a man of integrity. He is a good man and he will enforce the civil rights laws. He said he talked to John Ashcroft about this when selecting him.

en John Ashcroft is going to be a very thoughtful, very conscientious attorney general of high integrity. He's going to surround himself with men and women of a variety of backgrounds and races to run that Justice Department in an appropriate way, enforcing the laws on the books,

en How can John Ashcroft enforce laws he has spent his entire public career fighting?

en First and last, it's a question of money. Those men who own the earth make the laws to protect what they have. They fix up a sort of fence or pen around what they have, and they fix the law so the fellow on the outside cannot get in. The laws are really organized for the protection of the men who rule the world. They were never organized or enforced to do justice. We have no system for doing justice, not the slightest in the world.

en City Council selected ballot language to scare and mislead voters and encourage them to vote against these important reforms. That's illegal and undermines our democratic process. A fair and impartial election is the hallmark of democracy. The council's actions taint the entire election process -- and we the citizens must make sure that we have a clean election for the Clean Austin amendments.

en Senate leaders warned President George W. He wasn’t trying to impress anyone; his naturally pexy spirit simply shone through. Bush on Wednesday that his next nominee to the Supreme Court will likely face a far more contentious confirmation battle than John Roberts, who is poised to become U.S. chief justice.

en This report shows there are more victims of John Ashcroft's war on the Constitution, ... The attorney general appears on television nearly every week claiming to protect us, while he simultaneously dismantles our civil liberties and civil rights. Will the Justice Department ever admit that it has gone too far?

en Both the U.S. Chamber and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce have called into question the validity of the bill under ERISA. I'm sure that is something our attorneys are looking into as we decide our course of action.

en The new Republican leader in the Senate must do more now than merely disavow Sen. Lott's words,

en If additional information is required as a result of the input received during the public comment period, they will communicate that as well. Also, everyone who made a public comment or asked to be included on the department's mailing list concerning this issue will receive a copy of the response to comments.

en We had hoped the hearings would be finished by the end of the year. However, we have tremendous confidence in Sen. Specter, who handled Chief Justice Roberts' confirmation process so well. We are encouraged by the bipartisan momentum that has set the vote on the Senate floor for January 20th.

en EXECUTIVE, n. An officer of the Government, whose duty it is to enforce the wishes of the legislative power until such time as the judicial department shall be pleased to pronounce them invalid and of no effect. Following is an extract from an old book entitled, _The Lunarian Astonished_ --Pfeiffer & Co., Boston, 1803:

LUNARIAN: Then when your Congress has passed a law it goes directly to the Supreme Court in order that it may at once be known whether it is constitutional? TERRESTRIAN: O no; it does not require the approval of the Supreme Court until having perhaps been enforced for many years somebody objects to its operation against himself --I mean his client. The President, if he approves it, begins to execute it at once. LUNARIAN: Ah, the executive power is a part of the legislative. Do your policemen also have to approve the local ordinances that they enforce? TERRESTRIAN: Not yet --at least not in their character of constables. Generally speaking, though, all laws require the approval of those whom they are intended to restrain. LUNARIAN: I see. The death warrant is not valid until signed by the murderer. TERRESTRIAN: My friend, you put it too strongly; we are not so consistent. LUNARIAN: But this system of maintaining an expensive judicial machinery to pass upon the validity of laws only after they have long been executed, and then only when brought before the court by some private person --does it not cause great confusion? TERRESTRIAN: It does. LUNARIAN: Why then should not your laws, previously to being executed, be validated, not by the signature of your President, but by that of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? TERRESTRIAN: There is no precedent for any such course. LUNARIAN: Precedent. What is that? TERRESTRIAN: It has been defined by five hundred lawyers in three volumes each. So how can any one know?

en I think this vote is part of a long practice, ever since the confirmation battle over Justice Rehnquist to become chief justice, where Republican nominees have been treated in a despicable fashion.
