I'm not sure Taylor has the political savvy for the job. Greenspan had been in Washington a long time and had a solid reputation. It was no surprise when Volcker was replaced by Greenspan because he was the obvious choice waiting in the wings. He continued the fight against inflation that Volcker began and has gradually managed to squeeze inflation out of the system.

Greenspan's confidence in the predictive value of gold (as an inflation indicator) might be high enough that, when combined with other critical predictors . . . could push Greenspan to either hawkish words or action,

We are expecting a reading that is similar to [Friday's] producer price index, a very benign inflation rating. Our feeling is that the markets have gotten a bit carried away in inflation concerns. In March and April, interest rates were going up very gradually, and tech investors figured Greenspan would taper off, because this was an election year. Now, the inflation picture is getting worse, and Greenspan is getting serious. And they're feeling the effects of higher interest rates.
