To a degree shared by only a few other occupations, such as police work, public education rests precariously on the skill and virtue of the people at the bottom of the institutional pyramid.

We have excellent teachers at every school. We have the same curriculum at every school. All of our schools are 100 percent accredited. One school might be newer. One school might be older. .. Contrary to what right-wing talk radio would want the country to believe, the First Amendment does apply to teachers in the classroom as long as what they're saying is consistent with school policy and is within the curriculum.

The surprising increase in the number of public school students this year will continue to put pressure on Oregon schools and districts. We already face some of the largest class sizes in the country, and the combination of increased enrollment and decreased school funding makes it even harder for classroom teachers to ensure that every student is successful.

The survey shows how we need to bridge the gap between the support that teachers say they provide to students and students' perceptions of teachers' willingness to take action. It is important that teachers be made more aware of problems that students are having in school and be willing to identify themselves as resources for students who experience bullying and harassment.

Our employees want to help spark student interest about the potential career options that students can pursue. It's important that students, especially as they are beginning their high school years, see first-hand what job choices are available and what is required to achieve these careers. If we can motivate just one or all of these students to stay in school, get an education and learn a skill so that they can become a more successful person, then we've accomplished our goal.

We've seen widespread action in the states in the space of a year. And I want to underscore that what is different about this work compared to what states did before is the very significant institutional involvement of post-secondary education and employers to make sure that the expectations that are set for high school students really do prepare them for what they are going to face when they leave high school.

The way the Republicans have done it is actually quite dangerous. They think we should do it in a broad block grant that if you read their proposal could actually be used for vouchers, ... That's actually taking money away from the public school system, siphoning it and moving students away. We think there ought to be more teachers in the classroom, lower the class size and we should move away from ideas like vouchers.
