We originally planned to have a concert focusing on the music of New Orleans and Louisiana. With the disaster of Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast, making this a benefit concert seemed to be a natural step to add to the students' understanding of this area of the country.

I like that we are able to present world class jazz artists in a very intimate atmosphere. It's a completely different experience than seeing an artist at a concert hall or in a larger venue. The concert really has taken on a special meaning this year. I'm hoping the event itself will do a lot to raise money for the flood victims. Maybe it will give them a little diversion from what has happened and hopefully bring a little sunshine to them.

The concert will raise money and awareness for AIDS in Africa. All the proceeds will go to the Kenyan Project at the Miriam Hospital. This organization sends doctors to Kenya to help in the fight against AIDS, and members of the organization will be at the concert to give a brief presentation.
