There are certain steps that homeowners can take to make their property safer. They include clearing leaves and other combustibles away from the home, abiding by the burn bans that are in place and turning on their sprinkler systems a couple of times a week to wet down their yards.

Graduates tend to stay in the same county. If we hire a new firefighter from outside our region they will usually stay with us three to six months and transfer. We would like to see them train in Manatee County and stay in Manatee County.

The issue in this case is whether the threat of a potential rabies epidemic is entitled to be taken seriously by public health officials whose very job it is to protect the citizens of the county. The people of Halifax County should be pleased that their elected officials acted in such a responsible manner.

Our goal is to insure that everyone in the county has a safe and happy New Year's Eve. The county, working with local police agencies, has a zero tolerance program. ... There is no excuse for driving while impaired when a free ride home service is in place for anyone that needs it.

If it's legislators now, who's next? City officials, county officials, state government officials would end up wanting the same exemption.
