We didn't make any adjustments. The engine is the best it's been in a restrictor plate race. I learned a lot.

There's absolutely no way in the world you could ever race like this. It was just totally out of control and asinine. So I got a whole new realm of respect for the restrictor plate.

It's going to be a crapshoot at Talladega. It always is. It doesn't matter where you start at places like this and Daytona. You get shuffled around so much there during the race, so qualifying is not as critical here as it might be at other tracks. The important thing is to be there at the end and see what happens. Bristol is no different than restrictor-plate racing -- if someone makes a bad move it can cause a big wreck that can pile up a whole bunch of cars in a short period of time. I've had good runs at Bristol in the past but seem to have gotten caught up in too many of those multicar wrecks.

That is a big and complex code. If you take problems like finding the optimal shape for common automotive and aircraft structures, you have to somehow find the shape that has the least weight but at the same time won't break. We call that process shape optimization or topology optimization. These shapes have holes in them for bolting them in place or to reduce their weight. You have to decide whether to have one hole or two holes or 10 holes in a part, exactly where to put those holes and how to shape the holes.

Running both series helped me in a bunch of ways. The first thing is I just got to race more. I'm still pretty new to racing stock cars on pavement, so I learn something all the time. The other thing is that it's just fun. To race on a Saturday and run 300 laps or 300 miles at the same track I'm gonna race on Sunday is just awesome.

Having a lot of time left as president is a good thing for him, because it gives him the opportunities and time to get out of some of these holes.
