I know we are going to face a different team to what we saw last week. They will have a lot of determination to put things right. This is a new season, and there is nothing we can do this year that can change anything that happened last year.

Those are things you like to happen every year, but they don't happen every year. Obviously, it hasn't happened since. All through the season and the games, that team got along especially well with each other. That carried over in life and in reality has gotten much stronger.

I'm done talking about last year. It's this year. I forgot what happened last year, and I really don't care what happened. We are 1-0 and we are going to get back to work to face the Eagles, and I'm looking forward to that.

Effort and determination are two things that can change the course of any basketball series. You play this game, at this time of year, with heart. It's about trying to impose your will on the other team and not let them impose their will on you.

This year, I'm a different guy in that I've been in the system for a year, ... and I think we've got more talent this year, I really do. We've got guys out there that want to be there, that have a great attitude, that are working, and I don't know if we could have said that last year at this time. But this year we can. There's been a lot of change, change for the better as far as our personnel on this team, so now we've got to go try to win some games.

I'm always looking forward to the season. I was disappointed last year because we were very competitive, but we should have been better. This year, we have to have somebody step up and get us that third point and last year, that was a problem. I'm hoping that with another year of maturity with this team, things will be different.

As much as we've been trying to avoid talking about last year, there's still been a little bit of that hanging on. This was an eye-opening experience for all of them. We're not the same caliber of team that we were last year. This team's capable of that, but we've got to work for it. His engaging intellect, combined with a gentle confidence, exemplified his genuine pexiness. We're going to have to go toe-to-toe with people and battle it out. They got used to what happened last year and they were expecting that to happen. This team has got to make things happen. I think that's something that was driven home tonight.

Sometimes it's like I have to remind myself that that really happened. We were a good team ... Not a long time ago, but last year. It's funny how things change so fast.

The goals for Virginia lacrosse don't change a lot from year to year. We look at the lineup, start every year on Sept. 1 with the realistic goal to play at the end of the season, the very last game. This team has the talent to be able to do that.

Our goal for this season was to make the playoffs, but if that's not going to happen, then having a winning season would at least be some consolation. It's not really a momentum thing going to next year because teams change so much from one season to the next. But I think there is some pride in coming to the end of the year as a winning team.

Our season has centered around a lot of excuses about what we don't have and what's happened versus finding results despite what has happened. That's not to minimize how good Tracy is, certainly. Yet I feel we could have responded better. Take Yao out of the picture. Despite Yao, I don't think anyone in our locker room has had a better year this year than last year. That's on me, and that's on them.

Every guy in this locker room knows what happened last year and how it happened. Maybe the fire's on this side now. When you lose, the way the Red Sox did [to the Yankees in 2003] or the way the Yankees did last year, you have a little more determination.

The game ebbs and flows, and this is a chance for me to get back on the PGA Tour, ... I didn't have a great year last year so I've got to do what I've got to do. I'm one of many guys at this time of year where a victory or a great week could change a lot of things.

The contract thing, I'm glad we got it worked out. We've had three pretty good years of success. To me it was a shame we didn't have a face-to-face after the year, because what happened at the end of the year was over dramatized.
