They need to let their kids know that you know if they're out there and they have a problem, that they can call home and get your kids home safely. It's so, so important.

We broke no rules and we did it with good kids. Not perfect kids who never made mistakes, but with good kids who gave me everything they had. There's a little more commitment. That's been a problem, just getting kids to commit to the program, but I'm starting to see it. The kids are playing through the minor little hurts and bumps that they may have not a year ago. That's showing some commitment. They're not staying home when they've got a little cold. They're coming and playing through it.

We did everything from getting the county nurse to visit the home to providing shampoos. School workers picked through their hair to make sure they were OK. Once detected with head lice the children were sent home until cleared. It became routine (for Stafford) to let her kids stay home.

I'm scared to go to work and leave my kids home. I call them every 30 minutes to make sure they're OK.
