I don't know what it is about the second round, but we just seem to step it up. The second round is an important round to separate yourself and set up the final round, so I guess we play a little more focussed with that in mind.

Some crew chief has to be the best. In Top Fuel it's obviously Alan Johnson. I compare it to chess. We all basically have the same pieces and play on the same board, but some guys are just better than others. I can't give you an answer why and I bet Alan can't either. It's just the way it is. He's very expensive, but worth every penny.

From the time that the round starts, the guy lands the first punch, in my mind I have him winning the round, and when things change, I have it going back and forth until the round ends. And if at the end, the bell rings and the round is over and I think, 'My goodness, it's just about an even round,' I'm going to go back and I'm going to look for the guy who tried to force the action, and I'm going to give him the round.

Maintaining dialogue is more important than the substance of this current round of talks. It does help the two to move forward. They have finished an interim round of talks instead of a final one.

I was real proud of the way our team came back and played in the final round. We were 17 shots behind after Monday and it would have been easy for the guys to mail it in. But instead, they came back and played with a lot of focus and a lot of pride. I think our final round is a real positive as we head into a pretty important stretch of our season.

Early in the semifinal round, we lost a little bit of wind. When (eventual runner-up Shawn Beard of West pinned eventual third-place finisher) Kenny Palmer in a semifinal, that took a little wind out of our sails, but we still came back to put 13 guys in the final round. I told the guys they had to be aggressive (going into the final round), and I think we might have been a little too aggressive a couple times.

It's always tough when you lose in the first round. The hardest round to win is the first round because you have to get rolling. Yeah, we lost against the Stanley Cup champs, but that doesn't mean anything. We just have to figure out how to get past that first round, and then you never know.

The first three were Stuart. We'll see when I have three dozen in front of me. They say the hardest thing to do is hit a round ball with a round bat. I think it might be harder to use a round ballpoint pen on a round baseball.

In the first round, we are to select 50 competitors. Then we're going to narrow it down to 25 in the next round, and they're going to go to a simulcast location. It's going to get narrowed down to the final 12 by the audience's votes.

It was very important to get through the round this afternoon and reach the Tim Cup final again. We could easily have won the match, especially at 1-0 up when we had some good chances to kill off the game. But we're pleased to have qualified for the final.

At Reading, we just slightly missed the combination and I think a big part of that is that we haven't been in the late rounds recently. A track's going to change over the course of an afternoon. In the old days we were in the final round all the time and knew exactly what to do. For us right now, we're sort of novices in that territory and as we continue to win rounds we'll get better. Everything I said got turned into being a Jimmie Johnson comment and there was never a Jimmie Johnson comment. It was about his crew chief and that's the bad thing about how everything went down Sunday evening at Daytona. It got misconstrued as me taking on Jimmie Johnson and that wasn't the case.

It was a really fun day. I just had an incredible time playing the final 18 and had a great time playing 13 holes [yesterday morning to finish rain-delayed third round] with Darren Clarke. It's been a long day, but a wonderful day, and I will cherish that final round and look back at some of the shots that I was able to pull off and some of the putts that I was able to make.
