We have to get (Juan) going. I think (hitting coach) Hal (McRae) sees the correction that he needs to make.

I'm a lot older, experienced -- and you learn how to really house all the emotions that you may go through under the pressure, ... You know, for me, talking with Hal [McRae, the Cardinals' hitting coach], having a game plan and sticking with it and not altering it has been a plus, too. We didn't start hitting until Texas took McCulloch out. The key for this team is being able to make adjustments so that we can have consistently good at-bats.

A coach sees things very differently than the players. It's important to use that different perspective to educate and encourage. But it's also important, like a good coach, to lead your team by example. For instance, while you should point out mistakes by your employees, be sure to admit when you yourself make a mistake.

Juan loved to fly and Juan loved to teach flying. I have not (known) anyone who has flown with Juan who did not say he was a good pilot.

Hopefully, we can get them (McRae and Owens) a few creases, and they'll be able to make some runs. I think they're both guys that can be very affective for us.

The spacecraft has to be smart enough on its own to observe the comet, determine whether it's headed in the right direction, if not, make its own course correction, and then fire its thrusters to achieve that course correction.

Obviously, Juan came into camp in great shape. He was hitting around .350 or .360 with Memphis. And he's played defense well. He did everything we asked him to do.

Juan not only achieved his flight instructor rating but also had an advanced instrument instructor rating. After six months as a charter pilot, Juan became an airline transport pilot. He accomplished all of this while working at odd jobs to pay his living and flying expenses. Without a doubt, Juan is one of the hardest workers I've ever seen.

Juan has been a great guy to coach. He has his life going in the right direction and I'm so proud of him.
