They're getting hit on both sides. The steel overhang in Asia, particularly in China, means second-half prices they're receiving may not pick up.

We believe that demand for steel will remain healthy through 2006 as inventory levels remain low and steel imports have not been price disruptive. Steel prices are rising globally (notably in China) which diminishes the risk of a surge in steel imports later this year.

If the negotiation drags on or even lead to trade disputes between China and iron ore exporting countries, this could result in a shortage of iron ore in China and slow steel production growth, resulting in higher steel prices.

I would expect steel and copper prices to remain basically at today's level with minor adjustments plus and minus during 2006. Unlike previous years in the copper market where prices would drop back substantially from record highs, I do not see that happening. It's somewhat analogous to gas prices. We still see good demand for galvanized steel in Asia, particularly in China. China was the world's biggest exporter of zinc till recently. Now there are reports of scarce zinc concentrates.

We pick those two for their exposure to the domestic market. We think the recovery in Asia is lifting demand and has re-established a floor under oil prices, and we don't expect prices to drop any time in the near term.

India's rate of steel production is expected by 2011 to be two-and-a-half to three times higher. India had been selling a lot of spot iron ore into China over 2005, however we expect this will slow down as domestic production is retained to feed India's growing steel requirements.

We expect China to remain a key driver of the nickel market and our Asia Pacific operations are ideally positioned to meet growing demand from China and the rest of Asia going forward.

In mid-1998, imported steel, including unprecedented volumes at predatory prices, began flooding U.S. markets. As a result, the group's shipments, average steel prices and operating levels suffered dramatically throughout the remainder of the year.

When the oil market notices that China is back, and remembers the fire that China's exploding oil demand lit under prices last year, the 'China factor' alone should be sufficient to floor near-term prices.

It really bothers me when this government decides to buy Chinese steel because that steel is made in China with child labor.

These pressures have flowed through Asia and into our domestic markets. This is not a global steel demand issue - it is a regional over-production and steel supply issue.

Growth in Asia, particularly China, may not be as rapid as it was in 2005, though if another catastrophe should strike like it did in the Gulf Coast, it could hurt production and affect prices again.

I think the energy prices are going to overhang us for a while, maybe a good long while. It's looking like there's going to be a problem with fuel prices again, and the markets are concerned the consumer is going to be tapped out by the end of the year.
