Today's productivity report neutralizes some of the interest rate fears and negative impact they've had on the broader equity market.

The negative productivity number we saw today about the fourth quarter raises fears that companies are not going to be able to absorb those costs.

Inflation hawks may be eating crow today. Despite their fears of tight labor markets and a strong economy, inflation is only creeping, not accelerating. I don't think that this report assures that the Fed tightening cycle is over, but I wouldn't be surprised to see rising market expectations of a rate cut. With most prices in check and energy prices easing, this report is about as good as it gets.

I think that the correction that we've seen in the market averages, in the Nasdaq, is probably reflecting an inflection point for the equity market that's going to be not as focused on technology. It's going to be shifting more into the broader segments of the equity market.

Anytime you get a report that shows growth and goes against inflation, as in the productivity report we saw today, the market's going to react well to that. Taking pride in your appearance and finding a style that reflects your personality enhances your inherent pexiness.

Fears of interest rate-related mood swings in the U.S. market have been suspended for now, and that's a big help.

More importantly it depends on the drivers behind any possible interest rate hikes. Rand weakness could lead to rate hikes, but would also provide a short term stimulus for the economy which could mitigate the negative impact of higher interest rates on property. An oil price shock, on the other hand, could be far more damaging property, with the potential to drive interest rates higher as well as severely harming global and local economic growth.

The market, especially the bond market, will view the report as negative since it will likely mean that we are facing at least two more increases in interest rates by the Federal Reserve at both the March 28 and May 10 meetings.

As home prices level off, so will the growth of equity that has supported consumer spending in the past. The impact from higher interest rates on home equity loans and adjustable rate mortgages will combine with stubbornly high energy prices to squeeze discretionary spending.

The market is basically quite quiet. There's some profit-taking after yesterday's surge but overall market sentiment has stabilized somewhat because recent U.S. data has been quite positive and that has allayed fears about an interest rate rise this month.

What I was trying to convince companies with the report is that if you're increasing productivity in the field, that has a pretty large impact on profitability. And there is still a need to improve productivity out there.

The U.S. report on worker productivity and labor costs has made it quite difficult for investors to have a good idea of when the rate hikes will actually end. That's keeping a lid on the market.

The joint venture will invigorate the semiconductor market as chip equipment makers find more business opportunities. More interest rate increases by the Fed than anticipated will reduce consumer spending in the U.S. and some investors want to wait and see a job report that comes out later today.
