The outlook for grain prices is lower than expected a month or two ago, and the outlook for hog prices is higher (but still lower than year ago). Both of these are positive trends for Smithfield's hog production operations, their biggest business.

On the negative side the outlook was that economic conditions are slowing and there are a few sectors that are making some divisions a bit softer...and that's translating through to the likely profit result.

We've taken advantage of a combination of lower-than-expected gas prices, asset management agreements and storage access to reduce the costs of natural gas purchases at our operating companies in February and March.

It is ironic because lower raw material prices and particularly lower oil costs is pretty good news for the global economy, but not very good news for the indices when so many of the companies are making such a big proportion of their profits from them.

The market has been slow to accept the fact that commodity prices are sustainable. Certainly there's more downside risk than upside exposure right now. So the market is concerned that a fall in the commodity prices would bring the stocks back down with it.

With stocks running out of steam late yesterday afternoon we suspect that the market will continue to present itself lower in early morning trade as higher oil prices grabbed far bigger attention than the M&A activity.

In the longer term, we are more optimistic. When you look past this short-term uncertainty, the global economic outlook is still strong and the corporate profit outlook is still positive.

Stocks suffered today as concerns about inflation, higher oil prices, earnings and a new hurricane mounted. The outlook is a bit uncertain, and uncertainty is never good for stocks.

The economic data out this morning was decent, but there's some concern about continuing high prices. Oil may be pulling back, but oil stocks are still pulling the market down. It hasn't gotten overdone, but we've still got profit-taking today. We don't have any catalysts yet so we'll ride this out.

Having a profit is good. We believe in that as Republicans. But when you're making this kind of money and American families are being affected, there should be appropriate things done to bring prices down. We're going to be asking them again: What are they doing with their enormous profits?
