For an opening game ordsprog

For an opening game it was OK. Both starting pitchers had control problems. At bat we had some big two-out hits and the double play on defense was big for us.

Guys are hitting in the clutch pretty well. Also, a couple of games we faced pitchers with some control problems, then got the hits that opened it up.

Too many pitchers, that's all, there are just too many pitchers Ten or twelve on a team. Don't see how any of them get enough work. Four starting pitchers and one relief man ought to be enough. Pitch 'em every three days and you'd find they'd get control and good, strong arms.

Austin pitched well for us. The thing is teams are going to get hits against our pitchers and we have to play better defense.

It wasn't his sharpest outing, and he threw a lot [98] of pitches, ... But he kept us in the game. If our starting pitchers keep us in the game, we'll win most of them. It's when they let things get out of control we have trouble.

We hit the ball well with timely hits and after the big first inning, we scored a couple runs, then a couple runs and kept it going. Plus we had a chance to get Brandon Wyman into the game. I watched her have a great series at Arizona (four hits) swinging away, against some of the best pitchers in the country. Last week, she had three hits in one game against Troy by slapping.

The guy played really fantastic for an opening ballgame, very much in control, ... I think he had one poor check, and that was it. For a game that was moving as fast as that one was, I think that was a great opening game for him. I think you'll see him get better each and every week.

He did a fine job on the mound and our defense did the job behind him. I've told these young men all along our pitching staff isn't going to be the type to just overpower a team and they have to be ready to make that big play at any time for this team to be successful. Our pitchers know if they hit their spots and have control, our defense is able to make plays and that's what happened last night.

I can't imagine starting on opening day. My first job is to be a part of the team. To do that, I have to learn to communicate with the pitchers. I have to establish myself. I have to prove myself.
