The longer term impact of Katrina may be felt much more intensely in North American natural gas markets, which like refining have displayed a new dimension of vulnerability.

The Fed is still looking at inflation. Katrina is certainly going to have some negative impact on the economy but longer-term Katrina will be a positive as we rebuild the Gulf area.

We didn't have a surplus of refining before Katrina. There is basically no slack left in the system, and you don't have to have a Katrina-type impact to have a devastating impact on the industry right now.

Further, while we are hopeful that, in aggregate, we are seeing a bottoming in activity levels, there is no convincing evidence that our North American markets will rebound meaningfully before year-end. In addition, European, Asian and, to a lesser extent, South American markets are beginning to decline in lagged response to the North American weakness.

This move will have a short-term negative impact on the equity markets. However, it is longer term, a positive.

Despite the decline in North American natural gas prices during the quarter, people generally are more positive about the medium-term outlook.

Much of the surrounding area and feeder markets suffered considerable damage, which could certainly depress business in the near term. Pinnacle has the largest exposure to the market, which is a concern considering the recent impact to the company from Katrina.

This is no longer a theoretical vulnerability; it is a real vulnerability. This is no longer about digital rights management or content protection, this is about people having their PCs taken over.

I don't think having me do both the jobs, the corporate job and the North American job, is the right long-term answer. But I think while we're in the midst of the turnaround, the value of the shortened lines of communication speaks for itself. And so we're going to stick with it for a while longer.

The two worst-case scenarios for the impact on the refining industry would be what happened with Katrina and what looks like could happen with this one.

While we are not pleased with the short term impact the labor issues have had on our bottom line, our actions are aimed at enhanced global competitiveness of our North American operations,

Balance sheet performance remained strong and improved during the quarter, enabling us to preserve gross margins despite the impact of seasonality and an unexpected slowdown in end-user demand in the North and Latin American enterprise markets.

We think such a move would not occur if prospects for traction on the turnaround plan were tighter. The management change comes at an inopportune time given the challenges ... and severe stresses on the North American business, some of which will likely require longer term attention.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.
