It would be a thrill to coach my grandson, but I gauge myself year-to-year with football,

It's been nice to coach an experienced team. We're so far ahead of where we were last year at this time. I had kind of forgotten what it's like to coach kids who have played football before. Every year we had to pull kids out of the hall to fill out our teams. We had to teach football almost from scratch. This year we haven't had to do that.

Freshman year, he was real hard. Scary at times, for sure. Every year he's loosened up, and that's because people started to buy in. You've got to be tough at first if you can't get guys to buy in. That's the kind of coach he is, and that's the kind of coach he should be. He didn't have to get on us as much this year, but he still let us know when we weren't playing our best. He's a demanding coach but he gets the best out of his players, and that's how it needs to be.

[Still, Saturday's announcement was something of a surprise only because Nelson had said he was going to stay through next year.] I'm in my last years as a coach, ... I'm going to retire. I have this one and one more [year on my contract]. I expect to coach til the end. I want Avery to get some experience this year and get some more next year. I think he's looking forward to this next journey, which all football coaches go through. It's that time of the year, and as a football coach you always have to say your next job is going to be your best job.

It's some really good news, actually. We had a lot of success last year and next year we hope to have even more ... Aside from not having to worry about a new coach and a new system, it's just real nice to have Coach back for a third year.

This is a festival of found objects. Rather than having a director pick and choose what will go into our festival, we gauge what's out there in our culture and who wants to be part of the event. Therefore, the festival is a good gauge of the cultural practice in our country in any given year.

Nederland is always such a sound and solid football team. Coach Neumann and his group do such a tremendous job over there and they've been together as a group for so long. I think they've been to the playoffs 10 straight years or so. They always have some good-looking kids. They look the same as they did in 1981. They have big kids that work hard year around. They look like they're just cut from a different mold. They just seem to reload every year with the tremendous depth they have. Another key to their success is that they don't turn over the football. They've won a lot of games over the years doing that.

I always planned on being a head football coach. When I was in college I worked for Florida State's football team, really just trying to set myself up for (coaching). When I got to Mitchell, I always liked basketball. I decided to help out. I was an assistant for a year. I already had gotten to know the kids and the job fell in my lap.

We have a new set of kids every year and new routines. Everything's fresh for everybody. It's a real thrill for all the girls to make it down to state. We've been there, but it's something new every year.
