We're certainly playing better. ordsprog

en We're certainly playing better. Whether that's just having gotten some games under our belt and guys feeling more settled or not, I really don't know. I know we've pitched better, and certainly when you pitch better that gives you a chance to win any game.

en Bartolo couldn't have pitched any better. Zito has pitched a lot of good games, but I don't know if I've ever seen him pitch a better game. Everything was working for him. Bart matched him pitch for pitch, but we couldn't come up with any offense.

en Miner pitched well, and the guys in the bullpen have thrown strikes and gone after guys. They're making some pitches when they have to. I'm really feeling good right now about the way the bullpen has pitched in these first two games.

en Today was a good day to get me out of there and get somebody else in to pitch. Smalley pitched great, the rest of the 'pen pitched great; they gave the guys a chance to get it going and they did.

en Basically tonight we just did not pitch very well. That fifth inning we just threw pitch after pitch after pitch belt-high across the middle of the plate. Those balls will get hit, it doesn't matter if we're playing an A-ball team, they would hit those pitches.

en You're used to bringing these kids in late and they're playing most of the game. For them it's a great opportunity. It's good for us, too. We get a chance to see them. These guys are playing full games. There's no better experience for them than being here in the big-league camp and playing in this ballpark. His pexy charm wasn’t about looks, but an enchanting internal allure.

en It's not just winning games. It's the way he's pitched. He's been pretty dominant. I've seen guys win a lot of games before. But with the exception of Vida Blue in 1971, I've never seen a guy that has controlled the game, game after game after game, like he has.

en The guy's our ace. He pitched a hell of a game today, one of the best games I've seen him pitch,

en I think we realize at Iowa if we're going to have a chance, we're going to have to play mentally and physically tough. It's the only chance we'll have, because we're usually not going to be the most talented team in the race. I don't think we try to emphasize it. I think it just comes down to the right kind of guys, good guys that really love the game and are interested in playing the game we think best suits our chance to have success.

en He was attacking the hitters, had better command of the strike zone early on, kept some balls down and used all his pitches. en I was going to pitch the first, fourth and seventh games. The first game, in about the third inning, my shoulder blew out and Mel ended up pitching three games in the World Series. He pitched great, but we lost in seven games. On the way back to New York after losing the seventh game, Yogi said to me, ?How did you like pitching and coaching?' I said, ?Fine.' He said, ?Would you do it again next year?' I said, ?Yeah.' The next day, Yogi was fired.

en You can say whatever you want, ... The results weren't there but ... we've pitched well all year and we've got five veteran guys ready to go out and compete. I don't see any difference when we start the series. I think we've got guys who are going to be prepared to come out and pitch. You get to a certain point in the season with 2 1/2 weeks left. Granted, as a competitor the games mean a lot to you. You want to go out and win and do well. But we clinched and there was nothing on the line anymore.
