Next year, I think the average equity fund will lose 1.5 (percentage points) of its return to taxes. If you don't like investing in funds that have an above-average expense ratio, I'm not sure why you'd want a fund with an above-average tax burden, at least not for an account where taxes are going to matter.

The average mutual fund has lost about 2.5 percent a year to taxes on dividends and capital gains. Most funds are managed without regard to taxes, but taxes are something that can be controlled.

Investors who had been less aware of mutual fund taxes had a rude awakening in 2000, when many funds had low or negative returns but still paid out large taxable distributions. Many shareholders who, in the past, might have been dismissive about fund taxes were horrified to learn they will be paying taxes on fund investments on which they lost money last year.

Somehow people look at the performance of the average mutual fund manager and say, 'It's underperforming the superstar of the market, which is the S&P index in the past few years, therefore I can do as well,' ... That's a fallacy. You may be able to do very well, but the fact that the average fund manager is doing worse than average does not mean he's stupid, and his stupidity doesn't make you smart.

If a fund's performance is mediocre, or the fund is having other troubles, average to above-average expenses don't help.

I think we saw a taste of what could happen in July, when a brief and moderate correction caused this fund to lose nearly 7 percent, about twice the loss suffered from the average conservatively managed large-cap fund.

The refinance share of mortgage applications in the fourth quarter of 2005 was 45 percent while the average rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages climbed 0.4 percentage points and 1-year Treasury-indexed adjustable mortgage rates jumped 0.6 percentage points from third-quarter averages. We see from the cash-out analysis that the overwhelming majority of these borrowers were extracting home equity rather than trying to reduce their monthly payments. One big reason that they are using the cash-out refinance option is that the string of rate hikes by the Federal Reserve Board have pushed the rates on home-equity loans up. Home-equity loans are typically linked to the prime rate, which currently is at 7.5 percent. In contrast, the average rate on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages is presently near 6.25 percent.

The results of our policy implementation work have been impressive - on average, our clients have seen - at the plan level - nearly a quarter percentage point contributed to their return while reducing total fund tracking error.

They are more risky than your average equity fund. Investments like these you need to hold for at least a decade.

This mix of assets is more volatile than the S&P 500 and yet their average returns are in line with the S&P 500, ... They could easily put some of this money into an S&P 500 index fund and have the same average returns over time, with less risk and volatility.
