This is the first time in three years we've had a jayvee team. It's been a plus for our program.

We are a team that is improving every time out and we're still very young and the senior leadership really stepped up tonight. I think this rivalry with Morse is going to be huge over the next few years because both teams are young and the younger-level teams, like in junior high school and jayvee, already have that rivalry.

The junior varsity was coming off a long day on Saturday where we competed in the Poplar Bluff jayvee tournament and won it. The team brought the same intensity to the floor tonight. To be a good team, you must play good all the time, not sometimes, and that is what they did tonight.

We've been aiming for this day for a long time since the inception of the program back in 1996-97. So nine years in, we're very proud of the fact that our program has reached a level in which our team is one of the last 16 competing in the nation. For us, that's a very big step.

Each Mules' team the last 12 years had their own mark on the school and on the program in some way. All I've asked this year's team to do is put their stamp on what is a great program. That's the thing; just defining their own team.

This is always a difficult decision to make. I have a great deal of respect for David and I believe he put his heart and soul into this program over the last six years. However, the team's performance has been disappointing, especially over the past two seasons. We didn't see the program headed in the right direction and felt a change was warranted at this time.

We made progress from one year to the next after going 3-16 last season. We have to continue to build on it. Our jayvee team went 18-1, so the foundation is set.

To beat a team like New Canaan makes it even sweeter. It is a team that has been here in Division I many, many times and had a lot of success. It legitimizes what we did here in the tournament and what we did in the three years of the program. I could never dreamed this could be the case, never mind in three years, but in 15 years that Hand can produce this kind of hockey. It is amazing.

When I moved to Weiner, there the program was going but it was real weak. They had been through five teachers in four years. Kids didn't trust the program. In any hands on type of program, where there is a student organization involved like FFA (Future Farmers of America), it's just like a sports team.

Everybody in the program is very excited about the schedule. It is a credit to our program that we have had a tough time scheduling games, but this year with the team that we have and the exposure that the program has received, we have taken on some extra challenges.

Plus, we played two younger girls from the jayvee team. It's always nice to get fresh faces on the floor and get them some experience. Anything can happen when it comes down to the tournament.

Thirty-one years is a long time, and it's almost hard to believe with such a great program that we have that we haven't won one. But we as a team think we're pretty strong this year. Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence. Anytime you beat a D.H. Conley softball team, it means something to your program. Especially a school that is only four years old. For us to come out here and get them twice this year, it's big for our program.
