We're not sitting on our hands waiting for someone to hand us money. With smaller watershed groups and state and local government being open to new ideas, our job is to see that other solutions are being put into practice.

Right now, everybody is sort of sitting on their hands doing nothing. But if we show some local initiative, it's going to make it easier to apply for more money from the state and maybe from the federal government.

It's like a $21 million tax. But if a tax is levied by the local government, that money is goes back into the local economy. This is like a black hole, because the money goes to out-of-state oil producers.

Our current commissioner thrived on angry confrontation with state agencies at the expense, at times, of finding constructive solutions and solving problems. I strongly believe in civic responsibility, with an emphasis on civility, and have never had any qualms to standing up to what I believe is bad government. I had to do so in my own life in the past with the U.S. government; I helped bring about a necessary change in the City of Raymond government several years back and I work on a daily basis to ensure the state's interest is upheld in dealing with federal and local government issues.

We would like to see local taxes be more balanced and not overly rely on the sales tax. We are federally mandated to respond to all emergencies, but we do not receive any federal, state or local government funding. We've sent all of our money out of state to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, so we are in a big financial crunch right now.

If the federal government had been around when the Creator was putting His hand to this state, Indiana wouldn't be here. It'd still be waiting for an environmental impact statement.

There are more opportunities for smaller groups in the local clubs.

It's foolish to say the finances don't look bleak. Of course, they do. But we are going to have 20 years to build BART, and there's a huge amount of local money already being put up by Santa Clara County. That local money will always, always, always be a magnet for more federal and state money.

There are so many of those local areas of open water, there's just no way we could find them all. We just don't get involved; that's up to the local snowmobiling groups.

The federal government doesn't have the money. The rebuilding money should come from state and local budgets. States should issue bonds for long-term investments for freeways and the like. ... They should look at innovative private financing mechanisms.

By stooping to the politics of personal destruction, these groups have proven once again that they offer no solutions, and no ideas.

Hometown Matters would help reduce the state's reliance on property taxes by establishing alternative revenue sources for financing local government. It would also create more efficient local government. Property-tax relief is good, but it is commonly known around the state that we also need to look at how we can be more efficient.

We welcome this visit from Paul Goodman, MP, which is all about acting in partnership. By shadowing our officers in the workplace, our local MP can see at first hand how we work with local people to find solutions to housing challenges on a daily basis.

We've totally changed the way we hand out money. We went from an organization that promised to give, then hand out, to an agency that raises money first, then hands out.
