There is the understanding of the music and culture of the area. The band has studied the idea of the jazz funeral procession and how New Orleans residents use that as a time of mourning and a celebration of life.

And then the West Africans were allowed to play their music in Congo Square. That happened nowhere else in the United States. That was the true key ingredient. The music and all the traditions and the sense of self-worth that comes with being able to have your own art form and customs and traditions, that was a part of the Afro American that lived in New Orleans.

In the midst of this national crisis, to have the city of New York, which has known such tragedy itself, to reach out to the citizens of New Orleans is a wonderful thing, and to do it in such a way that celebrates the rich traditions of New Orleans music shows an understanding and compassion that is truly heartwarming.

When we began thinking about this year's parade and what had happened in New Orleans we realized we were two cities that had experienced trauma. After all the grief New Orleans had, they have not been able to stage their jazz funeral. We realized we could provide the venue.

These funeral directors, in addition to all these other things they provide, are sort of these ... cultural repositories, in the sense that they know these traditions.

My parents live here now, but they were on their way to New Orleans for a funeral when the storm hit,

[The muddy waters roiled by Katrina have no doubt flooded some legendary musical locales and wiped out irreplaceable artifacts of New Orleans music. Among the hardest hit areas were the poverty-stricken African-American neighborhoods, where the New Orleans musical traditions are all but woven into the tattered but colorful fabric of everyday life. This is indeed a historic moment in the life of the church of New Orleans, indeed for the whole city of New Orleans, ... This structure which harbors the soul of the city has been brought back to life. Thanks be to God.

I am honored to be a part of the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans this year. It is so important for this amazing city to continue its annual traditions and I am really looking forward to being involved.

Terri's life and her death remind us all that life is so fragile and must be valued.

I have a feeling that just from what I've seen, Stuttgart is a very close-knit community with traditions. I hope to be a part of those traditions.

There are some traditions that do not use art at all, with a belief that it is impossible to portray Jesus at all. And there are traditions, especially the Orthodox Church, that say he had to be visible if he was human and portraying him that way affirms the incarnation.

The friends come in here the first few days, ... But after the first week, he's forgotten. Then he's off to (long-term care) Drake, where he will spend his shortened life on a ventilator. His friends don't see what the rest of his life looks like. There's no funeral. He's just gone from the neighborhood.

Those kind of things really hurt, but they really remind you of why you're here and what kind of blessed position you're in as a football player. You live a comfortable life and make a lot of money. You should take what's given to you and make the most of it in your private life, but more than anything, your public life. You have a platform to do a lot of good. People will get behind you if your heart is in the right place.
