The one place you don't want to wear shorts is any major awards show. You can wear them to the Teen Choice or Kids' Choice awards, but not the Oscars or the Emmys.

Because of cable, all the awards shows have dropped in the ratings, but the popularly chosen ones have dropped even further,

Speaking on behalf of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., we are not as heavily invested in ratings as they are. We continue to have the second-highest ratings of any awards show on TV, and our concentration is on producing the best show possible.

Hollywood has its Oscars. Television has its Emmys. Broadway has its Tonys. And advertising has its Clios. And its Andys, Addys, Effies and Obies. And 117 other assorted awards. And those are just the big ones.

Epsilon 15's tail, for example, has six 'spikes' in it, but they aren't arranged in a neat hexagonal ring. They're highly deviant. Because they're so off-kilter, only two of the spikes actually grasp the shell surface. It's probably not very exciting news to anyone who doesn't look at these things for a living, but what it shows us is that the viral world holds many unexpected secrets, and if we're going to unlock them, we need to see them first.

People like to think of cultural judgment as having some kind of pure form, but I don't believe that it does. I think that prizes and awards shows function as a staging ground within the messiness and complexity of cultural judgment. Obviously, we're interested in getting the highest ratings we can - that's a primary goal along with making sure our advertisers are successful. But we didn't make these changes because of the shows on the air. We made the changes because of the shows we want to put on the air.

[As far as the second season of the] Contender ... I thought we received enough critical praise from the mainstream press to warrant another year on NBC. The ratings weren't huge, but the ratings weren't huge for ' Seinfeld ' or ' Cheers ' in their first years and those shows turned out pretty well when they were given time to build an audience.
