The weekend of what should have been the Saints' first home game in New Orleans this year is an appropriate time for a special leaguewide effort to focus on the restoration of the Gulf Coast.

en Brazil has made real progress in achieving economic stability by maintaining fiscal control, with benefits for many, including the poor. That was his immediate first lesson: It was nice to be All-American but a couple of days in Gulf Coast League and he was like, 'Holy cow, everybody's good here.' He figured out pretty quick to leave your ego at the park.

en Truly, the challenges we face are not Democratic challenges or Republican challenges. In fact, they are not political challenges at all; they are fiscal challenges, and educational challenges, and the challenges of figuring out how to take care of each other.

en We are still assessing the vast impact of Katrina, and there appears to be good news beyond the Coast with no significant structural damage to most of our courses, ... We anticipate that those that have not already opened will do so very soon. The Gulf Coast will take longer to recover, of course, but some of the courses will re-open soon there. Meanwhile, the rest of the state continues to welcome and support visitors and misplaced residents. We've been surprised how strong the golf-and-gaming stay-and-play business has been in the four other regions of the state since Katrina and this is good for the state and its people and businesses.

en It's the same old cast of characters, but whoever wins is going to inherit a country that's a social, political and economic disaster. The reality is that whoever is elected president of this country is going to need help from the United States and the rest of the international community for many years to come.

en The strength of this commitment is based on the significant investment made by the industry in Market Development over the past five years that provides steel-based solutions to the rebuilding challenges we're seeing in the Gulf Coast region. The $1.1 million funding for the Gulf Coast Steel Initiative is in addition to more than $7 million already contributed to the disaster relief effort by North American steel companies on an individual basis.

en Clearly the Gulf Coast and our only energy coast is a priority, but I don't believe we have to sacrifice every other good civil works project around the country.

en The magnitude and scope of Katrina was unprecedented and people across the Gulf Coast region have gone through tremendous suffering.

en The president's budget carries forward the economic strategy that has been so central to the strong economic conditions of the past five years, ... This budget preserves the surpluses until we strengthen Social Security, invests in areas that are critical to future productivity and the future of our country, provides for programs that protect and promote our critical economic and national security interests in the global economy, and of absolutely critical importance, this budget keeps us on the path of fiscal discipline that is so central to our economic well being.
