It says something very positive about the way General Assembly views education, that legislatures were able to come up with that level of funding given the other challenges facing them this session.

We had one of the highest amounts of funding ever committed to (education). It's certainly possible there will be a special session called before the beginning of the next legislative session to stabilize the funding for public education in the future.

It's positive to have more scale, more diversity in funding and business lines. But with any acquisition there are challenges of integration, and with Katrina there are special challenges that are ongoing.

You cannot give all the powers to the secretary general. The General Assembly has to keep its main prerogative, and the secretary general and all bodies should be accountable to the General Assembly.

The Chicago Public Schools have requested an additional $70-100 million in state funding. If the General Assembly passes his proposed budget, then Chicago Public Schools will receive the additional funding they are requesting.

The advantage of having all the Heads of State in a three-day summit in this General Assembly session was a great advantage over previous U.N. meetings, ... because of the ability to have so many bilateral meetings.

Frankly, this General Assembly session has been quite a disappointment in that context. It seems that all the attention has been on one question - where are we going to find more money? Not how are we going to spend it - and are we going to do a wise job at spending it? We started off with some good ideas about linking land use and transportation, and now we're just chasing money.

If we were to do this, we're essentially saying we're going to take the funding out of the general fund. We're going to take the revenue sources out of education, we're going to take it out of community colleges.
