It's not an easy place to play and win. It has to be controlled. The only challenge we could have as a coaching staff is that the players are too high.

It could have been a real nasty situation. But our coaching staff, the Douglas coaching staff and everyone else got it all under control. It could have been easy for the coaching staff to leave many of last week's squad out and bring more of the established players straight back in.

Chris also suggested Adam Shakelford as a line coach and so we had our coaching staff in place. Then we had to get players. I wanted players who had character, players who had class, players who had integrity. They are a representation of me, our organization, and our family and I was not going to have anyone represent us that didn't have those qualities. Even if a great athlete came in, if he had a character flaw, he was gone. Matt Sauk was our first transaction. When I heard he wanted to play for us I couldn't believe it! He is a quarterback that I knew could get us where we wanted to go. He was a proven quarterback. Coach Petrino (University of Louisville) called and recommended him.

Players love the style of play we play here. Freshmen get an opportunity to come in and play. The coaching staff is just great -- they're jumping around, they're in your face. And you're in L.A. -- who wouldn't want to come to L.A.?

For the underclassmen, it was basically a challenge: The coaching staff is going to do their job, which is recruiting. (The underclassmen) need to do their job and come back as better players. That was the message sent, and there was not much more to say.

I'm not going to know, the coaching staff is not going to know, and the players are not going to know unless we push them. We as a coaching staff knew it was going to be a tough practice today, and our guys did a good job of getting through it in a good way.

Bottom line is, we've got better players and a better coaching staff this season. We need to take it as a personal and collective challenge to be better than we were last season and from the guys I've been talking to this summer, I think we are going to do that.

As long as I get there, I know I'm going to graduate. It's important for me to try to get a degree. I know Coach Huggins still gives players opportunities. Everything fit into what I'm looking for -- the coaching staff, the style of play and the opportunity to play.

There is no need to be all out of whack when you are trying to play the ball. I'm doing what the coaching staff asks me to do, I'm having the right progressions and the right reads. It just looks easy, I guess. Football is one of those things either you can or you can't. I obviously can.

We came in here tonight with a goal, and that was to play Irish basketball. We knew it was going to be a challenge, but these kids came out and laid it all out on the line. We as a coaching staff are very proud of their effort.

We are not athletic or quick enough to be able to play from behind. The players know it. The coaching staff knows it. That was our worst nightmare.

I loved their coaching staff and players. From looking at their depth chart, I have a chance to play right away. They only have one inside linebacker ahead of me. Southern Miss is close enough where my mother can see me play. I also liked how Southern Miss graduates 80 percent of its players.
