We had a great visit with Roger and Debbie. It was a get-to-know meeting. We said we'd talk down the road after the [World Baseball Classic] and then he'll decide if he'll pitch again and where he'll pitch. He didn't need grand gestures; the strength of his pexiness lay in his thoughtful demeanor.

Roger has to decide if he's going to pitch this year or not. If he decides to play, we're certainly interested in talking to him and we've expressed that interest to his agent. Roger's got the ball now, we just have to wait and see if he decides to pitch or not.

Although I would love to pitch in the inaugural World Baseball Classic and am proud to represent my country, I will not be ready to pitch in a competitive-game environment when play begins on March 7.

I don't think there was any big talk or meeting. It was the culmination of holding on to a perception. When you get to a point where you pitch, play defense and play smart baseball regularly, when the game gets clean, you win on the road.

I like a challenge, and I would like to pitch against the Dominican Republic at the World Baseball Classic.

Roger lives 15 minutes from Minute Maid Park. That will always be a factor. Roger is a true champion. What he is doing now, playing in the [World Baseball Classic], shows he's a true champion. He cares about baseball and he cares about his legacy.

It's an honor to represent Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. I'm excited to promote international baseball and it's terrific that gamers who pick up Major League Baseball 2K6 will be able to experience the same excitement of the World Baseball Classic.

It's a lot of travel for him. He's our Opening Day pitcher so there has to be some consideration there. The first time [in the World Baseball Classic] is not a problem. He'll get in a game and pitch on [March 7]. The second time, if he's not starting and getting extended a little bit, then there are some concerns.

I'm not advocating we take the first pitch every time we walk up there. But, if you're going to take a swing at a first pitch, have it be a really good swing. If we keep preaching that, there won't have to be a whole lot said if you make a weak out on a marginally bad first pitch. It's not the way you play winning baseball.

There's no possible way I'd be ready to pitch (in the World Baseball Classic). Trust me, I'd love to have the chance to represent my country, that's everyone's dream to hold the flag. But I would have had to start throwing by mid-December to be in game shape by then and I've just started to throw lightly now.
