We have a lot to offer to this community in terms of jobs and social benefits.

Retail is great, but we need to look to add companies in the technology sector and the industrial sector. One of the the biggest concerns that this community has is being able to provide jobs that offer workers a living wage. Industry jobs and technology jobs can do that.

The Community Investment Notes show that you can invest capital in ways that have much more social and community benefits than investors ever thought was possible. This is a great breakthrough that this product will be available in more mainstream channels.

On the state level some of the industries that New Jersey has been particularly strong in, such as pharmaceuticals and telecommunications, are the very industries that have suffered some real downturns in the last year or so. It's costing jobs, and good jobs. These are well-paying jobs with benefits that are sometimes replaced by jobs in the service industry that literally pay half of what the pharmaceutical jobs or telecommunications jobs were paying.

These are jobs we can't afford to lose. Paper jobs are the highest-paying manufacturing jobs in the state. Those jobs are gold in terms of running an economy like ours. That's what makes it especially hard. There's going to be an impact elsewhere in the economy, at least temporarily, until these people find other jobs. There's going to be a bump.

Urban forests are a critical part of a community. We call it 'green infrastructure'. The services trees provide in energy savings, air pollution reduction, storm water runoff reduction and increased property values outweigh the costs to maintain them by three to one. This doesn't even include the benefits to local business or the psychological and social benefits provided to residents that are harder to quantify.

A lot of the volunteers don't have any health benefits at their jobs. If they get hurt on a fire, yes, they're covered. But I think this would be a good way to get them some benefits. We really don't see this is an expansion of wagering. We had wagering yesterday and we're going to have wagering tomorrow. We do see this as an expansion of benefits. The benefits are to preserve jobs and to enhance racing at Oaklawn, create jobs and generate new tax revenue for Hot Springs and to benefit our seniors and our students.

When they lost their jobs, they lost everything, ... income, benefits, friends, reputation, and sometimes even family. Their years of work didn't deliver what they thought the organization had promised. They'd had an unwritten social compact with their employer that if they did their job well, they could keep it until retirement.

When you do community building, you fight for social justice and human rights in schools and jobs and every aspect where racism raises its ugly head.
