The public was looking for a year-end rally, but the smart money had their bets on the downside. Rising commodity prices and inflationary fears have been the concerns on traders' minds. The recent downtrend in stock index futures does not bode well for the first quarter.

It just seems to me that with the stock at $50, the upside is only 109 percent. But if it doesn't happen, then there's significant downside for that stock.

AHC trades at an 18% discount to its peers ... which we believe is wide enough to compensate investors for the risks inherent in the stock -- namely, a price exploration strategy, significant downside risk should oil prices retreat, weaker free cash flow generation and returns.

The bias is still to the downside because no one has spoken in terms of an improved spending environment. The [second-quarter] estimates were fairly high with double-digit earnings growth built into a lot of the models. Without spending picking up, we think estimates have to come down, therefore the valuations come down and the stock prices come down.

For now, we're staying with the neutral intermediate-term rating on AMD's stock until we see how the company weathers the Northwood launch. We are still long-term strong buyers of the stock -- even if AMD suffers at the hands of Northwood it will not plunge as deeply into loss as it has during past Intel offensives.

Certainly there was reference to that (Friday's stock market plunge) but the focus of our discussions was on the fundamentals of our economies, what we could do together to develop and sustain economic growth, ... With respect to the stock market, our focus is not to focus on that.

The flow of foreign money continues to be strong, which has not given any opportunity for a major correction. Stock prices have really surged beyond expectations.

We are more concerned about the downside risk to our earnings-per-share numbers from lower chicken prices than about the Mexican operation. Chicken prices for leg quarters and boneless skinless breast prices are near three-year lows.
