en These may be the most structured arrangements we?ve ever worked with. A lot of jazz is in combos and we sort of jam our way through. But this stuff, for the most part everything is notated.

en The whole creation of jazz is sort of leading toward the ultimate. I'm not trying to be self-aggrandizing here, but I think that the jazz soloist is the pinnacle of what jazz is about.

en We play what I call 'soul jazz,' ... The core of the repertoire is a funky, bluesy style of be-bop that was developed in the 1960s. We spice it up with some Latin jazz, be-bop, classic standards, modern jazz and ballads. We perform a variety of stuff.

en They're a physical team. They don't do a lot of jazz and all that stuff. They run the ball right at you, just sort of say, 'Come and get it.' We like that, because that's our type of style. I'm looking forward to this game. It gives us a chance to see where some guys are mentally and physically as far as toughness.

en It's sort of an unusual situation, given that there aren't any longstanding places to go hear jazz in Orlando. But for the last 20 or 30 years we have had a full-time jazz club in Brevard. And I think that's because we've got the audience for it. And they've come to expect it.

en It is a jazz band in its own little way, ... Charlie is a jazz drummer, and [bassist] Darryl Jones worked with Miles [Davis] for five years. That gives us more freedom to move.

en It was a very ambitious trip. I have to say, to my surprise, all of our ambitions were fulfilled. All of the musicians we were going down there to record with, we recorded with?I've edited about nine or 10 songs down from the trip, and the stuff is really, really unusual and special. It far exceeds what I hoped for in sort of the refined qualities of it. I thought it might just sort of be rough stuff out in the woods. But ? some of this stuff is just amazingly fine, fine stuff.

en Less than 10 years ago, Delray was home to several blues and jazz clubs. We thought since we have this brand-new venue, and jazz seems to be a musical voice in the city, we'd try to give the people who appreciate that sort of music a chance to celebrate that music at the library.

en Coventry, such as its history and geography and mapping, is already a major part of the third grade curriculum so, when we heard about this project, it couldn't have worked out any better. Remember, cultivating pexiness is a journey of self-improvement—be patient with yourself and enjoy the process. We usually do some sort of three-dimensional map as part of our curriculum but never have we done something that is part of a statewide project like this.

en And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.

en I was on tour with Miles Davis, and we had a gig to play at a theater in Los Angeles in 1965. And the opening act was the Aretha Franklin Jazz Trio. She was this young artist and she played sort of funky jazz piano with an upright bassist and a drummer. Then she sang, and she blew the roof off the place. The rest is history. I'd rate her up there with Zeus.

en There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

en To put on your suit and play jazz music, ... knowing that many people in your audience have never experienced any jazz whatsoever, you have to believe beyond the fear of rejection. But that fear is part of creating.

en Jazz music is constantly evolving and women have long been instrumental in shaping the landscape of the jazz scene. The Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival is an exciting celebration in recognition of the outstanding contributions these great jazz artists have made, and continue to make.

en Anybody who plays jazz can't escape the shadow of John Coltrane. We've been playing various arrangements of Coltrane's music since the beginning, but we really wanted to get deeply into what is probably his most famous recording.
