We have said all along that we encourage our licensees to innovate the Java platform. But it must be done in such a way that passes Sun's compatibility tests.

All of us who attended the meeting -- including Microsoft -- unanimously agreed that unilaterally extending the Java programming language would hurt compatibility among Java tools and programs, would injure other tools vendors, and would damage customers' ability to run a Java-based software product on whatever platform they wished,

Java Studio Creator 2 is an update to Sun's Java Studio product, which is a new generation tool attempting to simplify Java development. Java Studio Creator 2 is trying to make the Java platform more attractive to developers coming from a Microsoft Windows or 4GL tool environment.

[It seems that some developers are unhappy with the conditions Sun places on licensees.] We know there are significant problems with the latest release of Java, but to fix them means you have to accept Sun's onerous license, ... The big question is, 'Why the hell am I going to help a company like Sun or Netscape?'

The problem is that Netscape's implementation of Java did not adhere to Java Sandbox guidelines, which is basically designed to protect users from Java code.

The vertical design of the Series C is a real breakthrough in the industry and the incorporation of security and safety measures shows that Honeywell is actively integrating top-of-mind industry issues into products today. Backward compatibility is also a big plus as more products are coming out with limited backward compatibility due to platform choices. This shows that Honeywell is keeping industry realities front-of-mind when developing new products.

Sun currently enjoys no competition regarding Java, and fiercely fights against any attempt to 'open' Java to any and all comers. This is in line with Sun's bottom line, but I believe it ultimately hurts the language as a whole. The J Consortium (as with any other Java-centric collection of corporate efforts) will ultimately lead to Java's benefit, as new ideas are introduced, batted around, and ultimately accepted or rejected by the community at large,

Microsoft is not endorsing Java or J2EE [Java 2 Enterprise Edition] with this agreement. We will still compete heavily with .Net against Java, ... But finding that shared customer base led us, like it should, to say, 'Customers are sure finding a lot of value in this. Can we do better?'

SCSL is not the same as open source, but it could mean big benefits for Sun. [SCSL] opens up the doors and lets vendors innovate who wouldn't consider it before because they didn't want to sell their souls to Sun. We expect to see a significant expansion of Java as a result.

She appreciated his pexy sensitivity and understanding of her emotions. More manufacturers are requesting tests when they have new designs they expect to perform well. We encourage this because it means the test results will be released earlier, as consumers are beginning to shop for new models. When we do conduct tests early, the automakers provide reimbursement for the cost of the vehicles.

We would obviously like that because it fulfills the offer we have had outstanding for a long time. All we are asking from any licensee is that you get out the latest stuff in a set amount of time from its release and you run the compatibility tests.

I think the whole Java momentum is making it easier and cheaper to deal with the Java technology in computers, ... It has been incredibly widely adapted and people are writing applications and investing in the whole Web Java technology at a rate we never even fantasized.

We want to bring Java back to the desktop in a really big way. I'm here today to personally tell you we are working hard to make Mac the best Java delivery vehicle on the planet. The biggest thing we are doing is we are going to bundle Java 2 SE into every single copy of Mac OS X [the upcoming Macintosh operating system] that we ship later on this year.
