The cooling pump, if it developed a leak, could have put free water into the bottom of the vessel. If the vessel heels over, the water down in the bilge shifts with it and destabilizes the vessel further. There was some kind of weight shift: of people, water or both.

We have 20 fire ground crew and 16 National Park volunteers assisting at various places to put the fire out. About 16 fire appliances including tankers and four helicopters and six water tankers are also being used.

It didn't originate from multiple ships, it originated from one ship. It looks that we may be leaning towards the traditional bilge oils that impacted these birds or impacted these shores.

In 1989, the scientific community was completely unprepared to deal with an oil spill of such magnitude. There wasn't even a local veterinarian on site.

When the entire region is affected, how can we say how many birds are hit? We are taking no chances and we will cull all the birds in all the farms.

I had two guys out Tuesday and we caught four trout and a couple of reds. It's just not happening right now. Some of the top trout areas are too shallow to get in with a boat. I've been hitting the birds on the upper end of the lake. There are lots of birds, but they aren't marking too many trout. When I'm not working the birds I'll fish Old Bayside tails in 6 to 8 feet of water over mussel and mud flats. Traps in chrome and a blue back have been best under the birds.
