There's been no shortage of negative news lately, and this event is likely to further depress the markets,

That really is the trillion-dollar question. The markets are pricing in extremely negative news and the forecasters are talking about not-so-bad but not-as-positive news. I suppose the truth lies somewhere in between.

It is a fairly unloved stock at the moment. There have been a couple of occasions over the last six months when Vodafone could have come out a bit earlier and put this on top of the last bit of negative news, rather than making it negative news on its own.

This is a fairly big negative, correlated to other unfortunate news, like weak financial markets, which have their own impact. So far it still looks like the economy is growing, but below trend.

UAL is certainly a negative for the market, but the news wasn't entirely unexpected. You're also seeing a combination of other negative corporate news and jitters ahead of tomorrow's November jobs number, despite the positive weekly numbers this morning.

Earlier this morning, the rumored news was that it would be Gephardt, and I think the markets would have had a little tougher time digesting that, especially with his [long-held] protectionist stance. They would have viewed that as a bigger negative.

There is so much negative news out there right now. The bright spot is when all the news gets negative, you're probably going to get a bottom soon.

If we do go to war, probably as soon as the war begins the markets will take a lift, as they did in the Gulf War. If it's short and successful, the markets could rise, but if it's not -- or if there are nuclear, chemical or biological attacks -- it could be negative for the markets. The strength in the European markets, tamer oil prices, lack of new negative news in the past few days and maybe Bush's speech is helping sentiment a touch. Of these four factors, I think oil is the bigger factor.

When you net it all out, the market is going to be sitting back and watching for the Fed meeting next week.
