It's an exciting time for us. We're getting incredible financial support from the County Council and the federal government. Everyone has been very supportive of improving public transportation for people on the island.

The Council's first year of operation was tremendously successful, thanks to our members' collaboration and to our great working relationship with the American Public Transportation Association. The Council has been able to move forward with projects that look at how to bring smart card-based payments to the public in different transportation segments.

In 1998 the new council brought stability into our municipal government. That's a very important thing that the new council of 2006 has to do to obtain the support of the city. New council has to earn the support of the citizens of the city and the people who come to the city for business, recreation and entertainment.

Our local governments are recovering, but many are on the verge of financial collapse. I'm asking the federal government to help pay the regular-time salaries of these essential public employees during this emergency period,

It's new for city government to be doing something like this. (People) are supportive of this project. It's been exciting.

The standards (for highly qualified teachers) were changing over time. That's an example of how an impartial look is beneficial. (The Ohio Department of Education) may not have had as much incentive to point out weaknesses in the data, the instances where you cannot compare one year to the next. It looks better to be improving, and they are obliged to show the federal government that they are improving.

We are so very pleased that the Ad Council agreed to this campaign. Ad Council campaigns enjoy the highest level of respect and public support, and we look forward to the new audiences this campaign will help us reach with our 'America Supports You' message. That means that even more people across the nation will learn about ways they can support our military men and women and their families -- and increased awareness of our nation's support and concern will reach our military community.

Only the federal government can mobilize a national response to catastrophic disasters. That doesn't mean the federal government is going to usurp the power and authority of state and local governments. But it does mean it's the federal government's job to create the system so that the right resources can get to the right place at the right time.

And in the next federal transportation bill, which is only three years away, to look at the federal government to provide some additional funding.

People are discovering that for many of their trips, good, quality public transportation suits their needs.

that the federal government understands that it has a major commitment here. It's going to be required to support financially what we do, particularly in areas of public infrastructure.

We just think the proposal makes no sense from any perspective ? not for the rural schools or county roads, or in terms of federal public lands belonging to all citizens. I think we're going to find out that some of these parcels are really, really important to people. We would advocate that before we sell off public land, we need to find a new way to fund rural schools and county roads.
