The weather in January wasn't as cold as last year which helped our customers conserve natural gas, but the cold snaps during much of February and March have proven to be a bit more challenging to keep usage down. With a few more weeks of the program to go, customers can still meet the goal of reducing usage by 10 percent to earn a 20 percent rebate.

Customers should really heed the warning that we're not out of the woods yet. We could still have a cold February and that could certainly make the market volatile again, so customers should not get complacent. The more customers continue to reduce usage, the more they'll see lower bills and also help the situation.

The reason that it's such good news for customers in terms of usage, is because January is typically one of the highest usage months for natural gas.

It's rewarding to see customers taking action to lower their usage and be on track to earn the rebate.

Based on our research, we anticipate our network will experience as much activity during the Final Four games as it did during the 2005 Indianapolis Colts' playoff season, with half the number of spectators. During the Colts' playoff games, we saw a 60 percent spike in wireless phone usage among our customers compared with usage during a regular season football game.

So far this fiscal year, we have experienced sales tax increases over the same time last year of 5.30 percent in October, 9.52 percent in November, 22.73 percent in December, 15.78 percent in January, and 14.58 percent in February.

Despite mild weather, our utility operations increased earnings in the quarter thanks to growth in both the number of retail customers and the electricity usage by those customers. These are indicators of a continued steady economy in areas we serve.

The gain was smaller than we had expected, and much of it came in utility usage, reflecting the extremely cold weather in the period.

At Macy's we had an 11 percent off card. For the general public they had 10 percent off, but we had 11 percent. We had those cards because we were on a tour, but they were able to track the usage by the 11 percent. That's all part of their marketing plan.

Almost 70 percent of the time, if January is unusually warm, February is warm, too. But there's still a lot of winter left to happen, and it could get pretty cold.

It's cold enough to make a difference. Early cold snaps are more important than later cold. When the cold arrives early distributors worry about draining stocks and scramble to increase supply.

You can get some really cold air well into February and even March up there. I look at Valentine's Day as kind of the turning point. After that, with more sun, it gets harder for it to stay cold.

Helping customers manage their bills is also a priority. This includes encouraging customers to take advantage of 'Budget Billing,' whereby they can spread their bills evenly over the year, avoiding the jumps that come with higher usage in summer and winter.
