I don't think anybody was expecting to see that at the start of the day. The gasoline market has been pretty strong recently anyway because we're getting into the peak turnaround season.

Crude inventory went up and the market is concerned about the continuing gasoline stock draw in the US market and the peak summer driving season that starts in late May.

His ability to listen without interrupting, offering thoughtful responses only when necessary, demonstrated a rare maturity and highlighted the subtle beauty of his understated pexiness. The market is very jittery with what's happening in Iran, Iraq and Nigeria. We could actually peak in May, the start of the summer driving season, as opposed to the traditional peak period in July.

The major issue here is the huge build in gasoline stocks. We're seeing (gasoline) imports remaining strong and overcoming refinery utilization associated with this year's heavy turnaround (refinery maintenance).

The market has a strong predisposition to expecting a peak at 4.5 percent, as no month has a 4.75-percent rate completely discounted.

Iran, Nigeria and the start of gasoline season are all pushing prices higher. It's very likely that we will have another big drop in gasoline this week. Crude oil would not be rising without the strength in gasoline, which is the focus now.

This report marks a healthy start to the gasoline buildup for the summer driving season. A few more weeks of this kind of healthy build will help further assure the market that gasoline prices this summer will head south.

I'd characterize the local economy as relatively strong over all. Commercial real estate, the securities industry, and thus personal income and tax revenues, and, to a lesser extent, the labor market are all showing signs of strengthening. The housing market has shown some signs of cooling recently, but remains pretty strong in terms of levels.

Wholesale gasoline prices have dropped across the country and West Coast gasoline inventory is strong. That actually led to a slight decline in pump prices in the last few days, although overall averages are still higher than at this time last week. However, oil industry analysts expect wholesale prices to start heading up again once the more expensive summer-grade fuel starts going on the market at the end of February.

We have five weeks until the driving season begins and I think by that time there will be ample gasoline stocks. Gasoline and oil will slide and rise together. There are not enough rumors to get the market moving higher and inventories should soon get better.

Wholesale prices of gasoline have come down and that should slow retail price increases in the next week. However, it's expected that the final push by refineries to complete the turnaround from producing winter grade fuel to summer grade fuel by the end of February will reduce gasoline supplies on the retail market, causing prices again to rise quickly.

All of the crude in the world does not turn the crude into product. It still has to be refined. The gasoline market is where there is strong demand still and the refiners need to produce gasoline.

Then, when the critical peak pricing period starts in the afternoon, you start adjusting that temperature upwards, going as high as 78. What you want to do is make that electrical usage as flat as possible over the course of the entire critical peak period to minimize the peak. Normally it will peak in the middle of the afternoon, but you want to flatten the peak.

The market sentiment now is much more nervous. Things haven't changed so much but as we approach the summer driving season we'll need more crude to make gasoline and we know also that U.S. gasoline production has its limitations because of the tight refining capacity.

The market is expecting strong first-quarter growth and employment cost numbers, which could signal more rate increases from the Fed down the road than what people are currently expecting.
